ODDS is a series of monochrome compositions built on a few general — or rather, vague — goals. The first, and most absurd, was to create a new set of Rorschach tests. The second, more concrete, was to explore the possibility of crafting symbols that mean nothing. The third, far more practical, was simply to make something within the small pockets of time that ordinary work allows, while letting that work shape the process itself. From there, as someone who works with images, a question began to surface: at what stage does a symbol take on meaning?
The compositions were made in two batches, which patient viewers might come to tell apart. The first still holds traces of cultural reference — words, ideograms, symbols. The second drops them entirely. As the exercise went on, its own rules formed naturally: shadows turned up everywhere, and outer space merged with the inner and the virtual.
The title ODDS is a blend of all the meanings that word holds: odd (numerically), strange, uncomfortable, unusual. In each figure, it was discomfort —or the conflict with the harmony of the composition— that fixed its final form.
